Big 12 Preview

Matt and John here and we're going to be having a conversation today about the Big 12 South and where we think each team is headed in 2009. We'll be arguing about each team and the possibility of the 3 way tie between Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Here we go.
J: Face it, the Big 12 South is loaded and is the best division in all of College Football. The way I see it, the possibility of a 3 way tie is something we should expect. We can probably expect Texas to beat Oklahoma in Dallas on October 17th. I'm expecting Okie St, led by the best offense in the country, to upset Texas in Stillwater on Halloween. I also think that Okie St has a chance to beat OU in Norman on the 28th and finish the season undefeated.
M: Oklahoma State, lead by an absolute 3-headed monster in QB Zac Robinson, RB Kendall Hunter, and WR Dez Bryant, is a very intriguing pick to make some serious noise in the south. Head coach Mike Gundy cares about his defense about as much as George from Seinfeld cares about what people think. He will put the Cowboys in position to score 60 points every single game. With that said, Texas is the most talented team in the south and the best game of the regular season in all of college football will be played in Stillwater when Colt McCoy brings his troops into town. While OSU could escape that game in Stillwater with a win, there is no way an Oklahoma team that has had 11 games to get their offensive line accustumed to blocking for the best pure passer in the game is going to let their cross-state rivals come in and potentially win a South Title. Last regular game of the Big 12 season: Oklahoma 63 Oklahoma State 45.
J: You are ridiculous. Oklahoma's offensive line is still gonna be bad at the end of the year. I realize that Okie State doesn't have a ton of athletes defensively, but to say that Oklahoma has a better offense than Okie State is outlandish. Sam Bradford was the best pure passer in the country last year because he had a huge o-line and he only got sacked 13 times all year! He is not going to have all that time this year, and he will not throw for 4700 yards and 50 touchdowns because Juaquin Iglesias, Manny Johnson, and 4 offensive lineman have moved on to the NFL. On the other hand, Oklahoma State has 3 offensive lineman back, including Outland Trophy candidate Russell Okung. Although Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, and Colt McCoy get most of the hype, Zac Robinson had 318 more passing yards than Tebow, and only had 92 less rushing yards. There's no question hes the most dangerous run-pass threat quarterback in the nation this season. When you throw in the very dangerous Kendall Hunter, who, in my opinion is the second best running back in the country behind Cal's Jahvid Best, and the unquestionable best receiver in the country Dez Bryant. This offense is loaded, and they CAN and WILL score enough points to beat both Oklahoma and Texas this season.
M: These are fair points and I don't disagree with the fact that OSU will have the most explosive offense in the best division in football. But you have to keep in mind that defense still wins CHAMPIONSHIPS and the Cowboys will be sporting a defense that gave up an average of 44 points in each of the last four games of the year and only return six of those defenders including a suspect Perrish Cox at CB who is the only returning defensive back. It is very easy to overlook Baylor with the level of play from OU, OSU, and UT; but the Bears will be sporting the conferences' most versatile QB in Robert Griffin when they go to Norman to show off a spread offense that will be looking to pick up where left off after they took then #7 Texas Tech to the wire last year. Then Baylor has OSU and Texas heading to Waco later in the season and their head coach Art Briles will have the personnel to upset one of those teams. Look out for Baylor to rain on one of the three powerhouses party this season.
J: Baylor? They had 1 good offensive lineman and he left for the NFL. Next year is the year for Baylor, not this year. They'll get hammered by OSU, UT, and OU by 21 plus. The only decent team they'll beat this year is Nebraska, who sucks anyway with the obvious exception of Ndamukong Suh.
M: Nice little transition into the North there Johnny boy. Right now the safe pick is to go with proven Kansas to take the North Title this year. They return QB Todd Reesing, RB Jake Sharp, and Wide Receivers Kerry Meier and Dezmon Briscoe. Nebraska may very well develop into the most talented team in the North with a Bo Pelini defense anchored around the best defensive pro prospect in the nation in Suh, and a running game 1-2 punch with Roy Helu Jr. and Quentin Castille. Watch out for Colorado as a darkhorse as they get their toughest North foes (NU, KU, and Mizzou) all in Boulder.
J: The North is irrelevant my friend. Who wants the chance to get smashed by Oklahoma St in the Big 12 title game anyway? Ok, maybe Texas. Kansas is going to win the North. But who cares anyway?
M: Only time will tell my friend. All I know is I can't wait for this season to get going.
